I’m not a fan of SUVs or crossovers vehicles but I do think AWD cars are becoming the future. I think AWD cars will handle much better than front wheel drive cars. My 2008 Volkswagen Passat handles well with just front wheel drive but new ones have AWD and I’m curious about how they drive!

Well as most of them have good 4 wheel drive but all of them have serious engine or transmission issues so with that said i wouldn't choose any

But head gasket is a issue.
Although head gasket is a issue with only those drivers who drive their car beyond the limits, pushing their car too fast.
I see a list of mostly non reliable cars. If I want awd. I want a car that can get to 200k miles without a sweat.
BMW 3 Series
most want an awd hatch/sedan, but you can get almost any crossover awd for 25k. all the awd sedans are either luxury cost or tiny hatchback
Replacement for an SUV requires decent ground clearance!
Therefore competitions are narrow. The Volvo V90 or small V60 Cross Country, the Audi A4 allroad (any A6?) and Subaru Outback are first obvious considerations. Likely there is few more.
Subaru Impreza Hatch FTW
The Audi RS is really expensive. But Subaru is really making a name for her new generation sedans. I'll take the Subaru Impreza. It's cool and moderate in it's price tag
