Glad people are being relatively civil about the review, though personally I'm finding it a little distracting that they got someone different to review the game instead of the one guy they got to see the previews.

Sonic 06 had potential at least in this sense but the story went over everyone's heads back then as well. Its been the same ever since. Either its a straightforward predictable adventure or undeveloped sub-plots.
Just by watching the footage it seems this game is WAY worse than a 7.
The world still feels empty
It's better for a game to have a tons of ideas, that don't always work, then to have a dull, uninspired game.
Constant praise for a month yet it gets a 7. Definitely just docking points off because "it's Sonic"

Finally, an IGN review who's critique actually sounds like the 7 they give it.
The combat at least looks much much better than the Werehog. And this reviewer didn't really seem to use a lot of the combat special moves and abilities they revealed in the combat gameplay video.

This game can serve as a proof of concept and actually allow the game series to evolve
As far as the gameplay goes it seems like there’s a fair bit of variety, which is what made the Adventure games so great. Shame the story seems to be more on the generic side, considering it was written by the guy who did the well received Sonic IDW comics.
