The 'black stuff' (yes that is a scientific term for all you or I know) is an electrolytic paste that has dried into a dry cake of sorts. The chemical reaction within it builds a potential (a voltage) between the inner rod and the casing material. It is not biologically friendly , so you know dont eat it or anything. And of course the rod as you know is carbon, in this case likely graphite. You can achieve a good effect with pencil lead as it will glow almost white hot. Maybe 5 minutes an inch until its burnt to ash. Biologicals must not touch the graphite while it is energized as it will burn the 'black stuff' out of your body. Use no more than 12 volts DC and the source must be able to supply several Amperes of current. And if you don't know what 12 volts is, then do not attempt. DO NOT do this with other types (non alkaline) of batteries as fires are very easy to start when those batteries guts are exposed to air or shorted together by and evil cold knife blade of battery slaying. Also, the whole thing is quite stupid and a waste of time. Have fun!
