Why are people thinking Hopper is “not the American” in the Soviet cell. The U.S. military came in immediately after the key exploded. No way soviets captured him and snuck off. The only way he could still be alive is if he’s in the upside down.
The end credits scene is the biggest clue
if it weren't for Dustin and Suzie singing the two would still be alive

They forgot about "not the American ", in the mid credit scene. He must have escaped out of the door that Joyce did and gotten captured by the Russians
These people didn't watch post credit scene?!!
I haven't seen one person mention that Hopper made Joyce's magnets fall for the 2nd time in the pharmacy scene, which is probably the clue to how he will be able to survive. Somehow he has been affected by his interactions with the Upside Down. The post credit scene was for people who missed the magnet clue.
When I watched the explosion, right when Joyce turned the keys, they had a shot of the machine about to get blown up, I didn't see hopper in that shot and I don't even see him at the moment of the explosion.
I have two theories
It's either he jump in the upside down or went down the staircase

In the end of season 2 they showed us upside down world maybe hoppers dint die after the destruction of the giant portal thing he phased away maybe thats were he went in the upside down world?
