The Valve Index is here! We spend a week testing the Valve Index virtual reality headset and share our extended hands-on impressions for the wider field of …
The off ear sound my sound better but having on ear is just as much about doing external noise cancellation… I don't want to hear what's going on in the real world and I don't want them to hear what I'm playing either… Kids running around, someone watching tv in the background are huge immersion breakers!! Plus no shipping to Canada is a major Boooooo!
my question is 120hz or 144hz with motion smoothing/dropped frames a better experience then the 80-90 hz?
Ill stick with my Rift S for Oculus games and Odyssey+ for steam games. That thing is severely over priced for not much a an upgrade
I really want a pc and vr
Yeah Jeremy, there’s no way you can smash a wall or your TV with those controllers ? Fists suddenly don’t work anymore?
I have a DK1, DK2, Vive, CV1, Go, Quest, and now a pre-order on an Index. I REGRET NOTHING
People keep wondering why the rift s resolution looks so much better than the Original rift even though the resolution bump sounds small on paper, (this will translate to how the Index looks as well). Lets do the math and find out why.
Well you have to remember that with a pentile display only having 2 subpixels per pixel if you have objects of a certain coler (red for instance) on the screen the subpixels are only lighting up every other pixel which gives effectively half the resolution and far more than twice the sde… because not only do you have two spaces between the pixels but also you have AN ENTIRE PIXEL thats black between the two pixels that do have the red subpixel.
Rift resolution is 2160 X 1200 for a total of 2,592,000 pixels and 5,184,000 subpixels Rift s resolution is 2560 X 1440 for a total of 3,686,400 pixels and 11,059,200 sub pixels (thats over 42 percent more total pixels than rift and 5,875,200 more subpixels than the original rift… more than double the subpixels.) Meanwhile the Valve Index is 2880X1600 for a total of 4,608,000 pixels and 13,824,000 subpixels ( though it is spread across a lot wider fov). When I measured the rift s fov it only came out to 90 degrees.
Add the fact that not only does a rgb stripe matrix panel already have a higher fill factor (smaller spaces between pixels) but you also have every pixel lighting up for all colors rather than some colors being displayed by only half the pixels and it starts to make sence why it looks so much better through the headset.
Thx for the informative unboxing. My Question: Is the Valve Index the 1000$ worth? if you compare it with the 500$ Rift S? And if you use an actuall PC with 1080gtx?
For me its not about the money, but i will not buy an 2080, still wait for the next 3xxx Generation.
meh, I was totally psyched about this until I saw the price and went with Oculus. Seeing this review, I'm just not feeling the excitement for this system at all especially since there are no exclusive titles announced. I'm sure it's good but not 1000 good. I'm really glad I passed on this
It's funny how valve's physical design has evolved to replicate what the original Rift design looked like… While rift's designs have drifted in the direction of PSVR… XD
Will we come full circle? XD
Also, you can get 3rd party straps for Oculus touch controllers that can mimic some aspects of the knuckles controllers (There's already an overlap of course) – specifically they let you basically 'let go' of the controllers without dropping them, which has a lot of niche uses.
Of course, because it's a 3rd party addition, most VR software won't account for it.
Plus the knuckles controllers have a bunch of other features as well… (Oculus's controllers mimic some at lower fidelity though.)
Really interested in the implementation of force sensing. Do they work for all fingers? Or it's just measuring the total force applied on the grip.
Don't say pimax more than 3 times otherwise Swervr appears and shills for an hour
This is a really informative look at the hardware. I appreciated the detail on the ergonomics like the foam, in/out headset knob, and arm swing test with the controllers. On the first day using my WMR Acer headset, I found the lenses got scratched by my glasses and I ended up 3d printing lens holders and got $20 prescription lenses. By being able to move the headset outwards, that tells me they solved that problem.
Looks awesome, but I don't have enough space or good locations for base stations and don't have a wallet deep enough for price of $1000. Sorry Valve, maybe next time…
Edit: Also, my PC wouldn't even be at the recommended specs for 120+ hz so, I guess for now I'll stick with the Rift S for now lol.
Im new at VR will this VR Bundle work with my Mac OS Mojave Version 10.14.5 Please reply
Thanks for this. I have always trusted and respected your reviews.
Great

im just gonna buy the knuckles lmao
Tried my Rift S for the first time last night and coming from the original Rift….WOW! So much better! And Jeremy Thankyou so so much for your headphone mod. Downloaded, printed and my God man amazing work!! ????
Hmmm. Is this considered better than the Pimax 5K? Could you maybe do a comparison between the two headsets?
Are the batteries on the hand controllers user serviceable/replaceable? From what I remember the HTC's are proprietary and cracking open the controller is not so straight forward. This is where I find the Occulus does it right.
